Back in the summer we had a special customer get in touch for a guided ride. As part of an eight part television series, Griff Rhys Jones was out exploring Shropshire and the borders and needed to get from the centre of Church Stretton to the top of the Long Mynd by bike. After a visit to the Plush Hill Cycles shop in the square, we had a short interview to give Griff a few pointers then we loaned Griff one of our finest Saracen Mantra hire bikes and a Lazer helmet, saddled up and showed him the quickest route to the top.

Riding from the shop the road climbs steeply up the Burway, climbing above the trees and houses opening up the view over Carding Mill Valley with views behind towards Caer Caradoc and the Lawley. The weather was very kind and the views where fantastic unlike the gradient that was a bit of a shock to the TV presenter. The steep narrow road proved challenging for the film crew to find the right angle to capture the view which gave us time for a breather.

Each episode Griff is given a challenge, in episode eight he starts in Ludlow and is challenged to find a dragon. His journey brings him to Church Stretton and up the Burway in search of a dragon.

Our Church Stretton shop is located on the square in the centre of the town and the centre of the trail network. Please call in for local maps of mtb and road cycling routes or you too can book your own guide so you can cut straight to the best bits.

Griff’s Great Britain episode eight is shown at 8pm Monday 22nd on ITV.
